High performance polymers for water-based drilling fluids

Experts in the oil and gas industry, such as operators, contractors and mud service companies, know that the composition of drilling fluid components is critical for the success of their operations. For environmental reasons, more and more drilling fluids (muds) are based on water. To obtain the best performance, it is crucial that they contain the right additives.

CMCs (carboxymethyl cellulose) and the closely related PACs (polyanionic cellulose) are vital components for reducing fluid loss. Depending on the grade, they can also make an important contribution to the viscosity and the shale inhibitive properties of the drilling fluid.

To meet the requirements of the drilling fluid systems, Akzo Nobel supplies a range of CMC and PAC grades. GABROIL, GABROSA and STAFLO are well-known brands throughout the oil industry. Akzo Nobel is one of the few suppliers able to deliver a full range of high-performance polymers in both technical and pure grades.

Function of drilling fluids:

  • cooling and lubrication of the bit and the drill string,
  • transport of drilled solids and cuttings to the surface,
  • protection of the bore hole and the formation drilled and
  • maximizing of the penetration rate.
