Associative thickeners

The BERMODOL PUR range of polyurethane-based associative thickeners –  BERMODOL PUR 2102, 2130 and 2150 –  has been developed to enable paint manufacturers to formulate their paints to suit market preferences on viscosity, brushing resistance, hiding power, levelling, consistency and spatter-free application.

Since they are associative thickeners, they are highly dependent on their interactions with other ingredients in the formula, including binders, surfactants, dispersants and pigment particles.

Their hydrophobic groups interact with other hydrophobic groups or with surfaces resulting from components present in the paint. They also interact with one another, contributing to an increase in viscosity.

The main difference between the products lies in how much they associate with other hydrophobic components. BERMODOL PUR 2102 and 2150 display the strongest associations. BERMODOL PUR 2130 displays the weakest association.
Their differing associative performances lead to different rheological behavior, enabling them to be employed to obtain different end-results in paint formulations.

BERMODOL PUR 2102 – tin and NP-free

BERMOCOLL PUR 2102 is a high-efficiency thickener that mainly enhances low and medium shear viscosity. BERMODOL PUR 2102 is especially suitable in paints with binders that have weak associations with associative thickeners

BERMODOL PUR 2130 – tin, NP and VOC-free

BERMOCOLL PUR 2130 mainly enhances application viscosity, and is used in water-borne gloss paint as the sole thickener or in combination with BERMODOL PUR 2102 or PUR 2150. It is also used in semi-gloss paints in combination with BERMOCOLL cellulose ethers.

BERMODOL PUR 2150 – tin, NP and VOC-free   

BERMODOL PUR 2150 is our high-efficiency polyurethane thickener which mainly enhances low and medium shear viscosity. BERMODOL PUR 2150 is especially suitable in paints with binders that have weak association with associative thickeners.
